Snowmobiling is a popular winter pastime, especially in New England. Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire are famous for their snowmobile trails and ride-in lodges, and cabins. Here are some of the best trails to try this winter!
New Hampshire
Pittsburg Snowmobile Trail
This famous snowmobile trail system is made up of both state and club trails. One of the most picturesque trails parallels the Nash stream in the Nash Stream State Park. Pittsburg, New Hampshire, boasts over 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails and numerous trailside lodges, stores, restaurants, and other services.
Concord Snowmobile Trails
Concord, New Hampshire, is surrounded by prime snowmobile trails groomed by the local snowmobile clubs. Pick any direction in Concord, and you’ll find yourself just a stone’s throw from a trailhead. Just east of Concord, you will find the Pawtuckaway State Park. Located less than 40 miles from Boston, MA, Pawtuckaway State Park boasts over 5,000 acres of pristine snow from Christmas through April.
Rockingham Recreational Rail Trail
Nestled in Southern New Hampshire, the Rockingham Recreational Rail Trail offers 27.3 miles of gorgeous scenery, from picturesque ponds to historic bridges. This trail is well-maintained and relatively flat, though rocky. Be sure to check the snowfall reports before heading out.
Maine
Kennebec River Rail Trail
For a shorter trip, try out the Kennebec River Rail Trail. This 12.5-mile trail follows the Kennebec River new Hallowell, Maine. The trail itself is flat and accessible for all skill levels. Be sure to check snowfall reports before hitting this paved trail.
Bingham Wind Farm
The Bingham Wind Farm is a surprisingly popular snowmobiling destination. The Bingham Wind Farm trails are a part of the Interconnected Trail System. If you’re starting out at The Forks, you’ll want to take Trail 87 towards Bingham. The experience lends a sense of surrealism seldom found anywhere else. You’ll find yourself traversing the massive, snow-covered fields of giant windmills!
Burnt Meadow
The Burnt Meadow/ Brownfield snowmobiling trails cover Maine’s Western Mountains, bordering New Hampshire. These trails are maintained by The Burnt Meadow Snowmobile Club. On this trail, you’ll take in the stunning views of snow-topped mountain peaks, snowfields, and historic railroads.
Vermont
The Northeast Kingdom
The Northeast Kingdom region of Vermont is famous for its snowmobiling trails, and at the heart of this snowmobiling, mecca is Island Pond. Trail systems originating in Island Pond branch out in all directions, with no shortage of adventure. There are many reasons why The Northeast Kingdom is often called “God’s Country,” and its beautiful scenery is definitely one of them.
Rutland-Killington
The Rutland-Killington area of Vermont offers numerous trails for snowmobiling adventures. You’ll find no shortage of winter lodges and resorts, with snowmobile rentals, snowboarding, skiing, and every other winter sport you can imagine!
Waterbury-Montpelier
This region of Vermont offers the most accessible trails. Vermont’s capital city, Montpelier, is only a 45-minute drive from the Burlington International Airport and is the dead center of the state. From the region, you can connect to Vermont’s 5,000 miles of well-marked snowmobiling trails.
